Many of you are familiar with our rescue donkey pair, Cora and Cosmo. Their story is one of heartbreak and resilience. In February 2024, they were tragically attacked by dogs in a neighboring state.

Cora’s situation was especially heartbreaking—she’s a senior donkey who couldn’t defend herself against the aggressive dogs. Cosmo, being younger and stronger, was able to kick the dogs away and protect himself, but his loyalty and courage shone through as he stayed by Cora’s side throughout the entire attack.

Now Cosmo is living his best life at our sanctuary… though he’s no longer with Cora, and that’s entirely his own doing!

Cosmo has a mischievous streak and just couldn’t help stirring up trouble with the larger herd. Always looking to start playful chaos, we had to move him into a smaller group where he can be his rambunctious self without picking too many donkey fights!

But Cosmo also gave us one big surprise…

Even though we geld all our rescued male donkeys, in those early days for his rescue, before we could separate them, Cosmo found just the right moment… and now, Cora is carrying his baby!

Her foal is due any day now, and we’re eagerly awaiting the arrival of this unexpected little life… proof that even in the darkest rescues, there can be moments of joy we never saw coming.

We’re so thankful Cosmo is safe with us now. We can’t imagine what could’ve happened to him and Cora if we hadn’t stepped in when we did, and we couldn’t have done it without you.

Please consider sponsoring Cosmo. Your support makes it possible for us to care for him and all the animals who need a second chance.

WE HAVE A BIG ANNOUNCEMENT TO MAKE!!!

Remember Cora & Cosmo, the donkeys we rescued last February after they were brutally attacked by dogs? They traveled 14 hours to reach us in Ceará… and Cora wouldn’t have survived without urgent care.

During their hospitalization, they remained in the same stall for the first month because they were both deeply traumatized. Separating them only caused more distress, so we kept them together to support their healing.

Recently, we noticed changes in Cora…. her belly growing, her behavior shifting… and called in our vet. Though she wasn’t thrilled about the exam, we saw enough to confirm… CORA IS PREGNANT!!!!

She’s already over 10 months along, which means we’re expecting a baby donkey very soon. As always geld all of our male donkeys, and Cosmo was gelded as soon as he was stable enough, but not before fathering one final foal during their hospital stay!

Cora is now on supplements and under close watch as we prepare for a safe, peaceful birth. A new life is coming… and we can’t wait to welcome this little miracle. Stay tuned!

Both Cora and Cosmo are doing well and have fully adapted to the rest of the herd. Recently, it was deworming day for all our horses and donkeys, and we applied tick and flea medication to their backs. With the rainy season approaching, the risk of tick infestations increase, so we always take precautions to keep everyone healthy.

It’s been a while since we have shared an update on Cora. We posted recently about her other half, Cosmo, who is healing from his gelding surgery and is still separated from Cora and the rest of the herd.

Cora is doing great! She’s more shy and still not very comfortable with us humans yet, and we understand her completely, especially after all she went through. We respect her, and will give her all the time she needs to warm up to us! She has adjusted very well with the rest of the herd, but we can’t wait to reunite Cora and Cosmo again!!!!
