In 2024, we found Chica abandoned at a gas station across from the hotel where we used to stay during our rescues in Ceará. We started feeding her day and night, hoping someone would come for her. One of the gas station attendants told us her owner had returned once but said she never stayed home, so he gave up on trying.
But we know stories like this all too well. Dogs don’t run away from love. Chica wasn’t leaving home, she was leaving hunger. She wandered off in search of food because no one cared for her the way she deserved.
Chica is a senior girl, sweet and gentle. She has no teeth left in her upper jaw and had several old ulcers that had begun to heal on their own by the time we rescued her. One of her eyes is cloudy, but she can still see well enough from the other to navigate the world around her. Despite all she’s endured, she remains soft, trusting, and so full of love.
Recently, we learned that Chica has a full rupture of her cranial cruciate ligament (CCL), which is the dog’s equivalent of a torn knee ligament. She needs surgery to walk without pain, but we can’t do it without help.
